About

Niklas Benjamin Hoffmann | Conductor

Niklas Benjamin Hoffmann first attracted international attention in 2016 when he won the prestigious Donatella Flick & LSO Conducting Competition in London. He was appointed as Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and has been in demand as a guest conductor all over Europe since then. His enthusiasm and creative approach have repeatedly thrilled both audiences and musicians.

He studied in Weimar with Prof. Nicolás Pasquet, Prof. Gunter Kahlert, Martin Hoff, and Markus Frank. While still a student, he worked with professional orchestras such as the Jena Philharmonic, the Leipzig Radio Orchestra, and the Staatskapelle Weimar. He was the Artistic Director of the Academic Orchestra Göttingen and held a scholarship from the Conductor’s Forum of the German Music Council, a scheme to support talented young conductors.

In his position in London, he has worked closely with the musical director, Sir Simon Rattle, as well as with guest conductors such as Valery Gergiev and Bernard Haitink. His public debut with the London Symphony Orchestra came in March 2017 when he stepped in at short notice to conduct the first concert of a British symphony orchestra in Vietnam, held at an open-air venue before an audience of 60,000. Since then, he has accepted invitations as a guest conductor from the Haydn Orchestra Bolzano (Italy), the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra (Denmark), the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra (Russia), the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra (Germany), the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland Pfalz (Germany), and the Orchestra della Toscana in Florence (Italy).

In April 2019, he was awarded the Festival Award of the Allegretto Zilina Festival 2019 for his performance with the Slovak Sinfonietta. In 2023, he won yet another prestigious competition, the Lovro von Matacic Conducting Competition in Zagreb, and received, in addition to the 1st Prize, the Special Prize by the Croatian Radio Orchestra.

From the 2024/25 Season onwards, he has debuts with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Croatian Radio Orchestra, Royal Danish Opera, Silesian Philharmonic, and returns to the Orchestra della Toscana in Florence and Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milano. Besides his keen interest in the classical repertoire, he is also a composer and attaches great importance to contemporary music and the development of new performance concepts. In 2018, he founded Ensemble Momentum, a collective of young musicians who connect the highest musical standards with a cross-art approach, seeking dialogue with other art forms. The ensemble has since been invited to festivals such as the Detect Classic Festival, Fuchsbau Festival, and Thüringer Bachwochen.
